Character Name: Roxane-Therese Vallier
Gender: Female
Race:
Physical Description:
A fairly ordinary-looking young woman, Roxane reaches a height of five foot five. Her wavy pale blond hair, her most noticeable feature, falls to her waist. Her naturally parted bangs, much to her dismay, are fairly unruly. No matter how she attempts to keep them curled and neatly shaped, a few locks on the right refuse to keep their shape and go limp, partially obscuring one of her slightly tilted brown eyes. Her nose is long and thin and the left side of her lips seems to always be quirked up slightly in the beginnings of a know-it-all smirk.. Her build is slender, with little in the way of curves to flaunt her femininity.
Roxane sticks to the traditional shikuhasho, but she adds her own personal touches to it, here and there. For example, around her neck is a tiny gold Cross of Lorraine which she never removes. The sleeves of her black kimono are a tad shorter than normal, revealing a few metal bangles that have been slipped around her slim wrists and occasionally catch on the hem. One can see the typical white kosode beneath the top, warding off sweat. Rather than the standard white sash, she's chosen a slim obi in dark plum that's tied at the side in a simple knot, the ends dangling rakishly to her knees. Her standard-issue set of black hakama are a bit worn, but serviceable. Along with that, Roxane's got on the usual white tabi socks and straw zori.
History:
As can be figured out from her name, Roxane-Therese Vallier was French by birth. The daughter of a minor government official stationed in the French Embassy in Tokyo, she grew up multicultural and multilingual - she learned to speak English, French and Japanese fluently, and picked up bits and pieces of other languages as the years went by, drinking them in as she heard them like water.
She returned to France for proper schooling during her teenage years, and her remarkable skills with language earned her a spot in the diplomatic corps as a junior translator. But the Second World War intervened, and the Nazis invaded France. Her fiance George's death in the army strengthened her patriotic resolve to a fine point. Although her family begged her not to take the risk, she left Paris and joined the Resistance in his memory.
While she did not take part in any sabotage operations, Roxane did learn how to fight to defend herself, was a encoder and courier for messages between resistance cells in the countryside, and helped to ferry people on the run to safety. Unfortunately, Roxane's cell was betrayed by someone they trusted, after his family had been threatened. It was all over very quickly. She and her comrades were rounded up by the Nazis, interrogated, and shot in the spring of 1944.
More stunned than anything, Roxane could only watch as the local folks came out of hiding and carted her body away. This made it surprisingly easy for the shinigami on duty to give her soul burial; he shook her gently, waking her out of her funk, apologized for her life being so short – then implied there was more to it all than this. If she was willing to hang on to the strength of will that’d brought her this far, she would find there was much more that she could do. However, before Roxane could ask what exactly he meant by that, he tapped her on the head with the butt of his blade, and she found herself in the 10th ward of Western Rukongai, with a crowd of people hovering around her, eager to explain to the newest resident just what was going on. She was perfectly comfortable around them, but was somewhat conflicted for the first few months as she settled in – the Japanese had been on the other side in the war, after all.
Roxane's companions were eager to begin new lives in this strange place called Soul Society they'd been sent to, and did so, However, the young lady herself was not. She was nowhere near ready to rest on her laurels; there was far, far too much still to do. Looking around her section of Rukongai confirmed this. Falling back on her teaching credentials, she found a job at a small school in Seiretei. It was a difficult job, due to the poverty of her area, and an endless calvacade of ruffians that were more than happy to cause trouble for people trying to better themselves. But there were happy points; she found her fiance against all odds, and they started trying to pick up where they left off after his death.
Then one day, a couple of those local punks interrupted her class again and dared to lay a hand on one of her students. That did it. Picking up her pointer stick, Roxane wound up, prepared to swing - and discovered that the stick was *glowing* by some power she was unaware of. Word spread, and soon Seiretei had sent some low-level shinigami to take her to the white city. After all, they told her, she had the capacity to be a protector to far more than her teensy section of Rukongai, now.
This young woman with the heart of a lion applied and entered the Academy on her second attempt.

Zanpakutoh Name: Nekkyousha - “Maniac”
Zanpakutoh Description (Sealed):
Nekkyousha is on the extremely short end for such blades, topping out at 60cm (just under 2 feet). Aside from the saya being bleached to a silver-gray, it is undecorated; clearly the maker saved the decorations for the blade itself. The first eighth of the saya is wrapped with white and blue sageo braiding, which is then bound to her obi for extra security. She tucks her zanpakutou in her obi as many do, but sometimes attaches it to a strap and carries Nekkyousha on her back for a faster draw.
The name the zanpakutou gives itself seems out of place with its whimsical design. The hilt is wrapped in silver and black ribbon, with a gold underlay. Little brass birds – owls – take wing beneath the wrappings. The oval tsuba, or guard, is fairly simple. Made of blackened and bronzed iron, there’s delicate detailing in gold of an drunken sage in all his finery waving a jug of wine and singing to the smiling moon.
Shikai Release Phrase: “Warae, Nekkyousha” (Laugh, Maniac)
Shikai Description:
Upon speaking the zanpakutou's command phrase, Roxane unsheathes the sword, swinging it upward in an arc. The ribbons unwrap from the blade's tsuka, removing themselves entirely from it, and wrap around her wrist. The metal of the blade, now free of its confines, lengthens and curves into a graceful steel crescent moon that is filigreed with copper along the inside edge. In its new form, it hovers within reach of Roxane's right hand. It floats around the shinigami, spinning, and as it spins, it glows with a golden fire along the edge.
(Ever see the movie Warriors of Zu? Yes. THAT sword.)
Anyone standing near can hear a sound coming from the zanpakutou – soft maniacal laughter.
Shikai Description:
Nekkyousha flies, moving in response to Roxane's hand gestures and mental commands. Due to it primarily being a weapon that she can't exactly hold in its released mode, Roxane has had to step up her hohou (hand-to-hand) and kidou abilities. The result is her fighting style being an acrobatic dance, full of leaps, punches, kicks, and dodges, and the occasional kidou bind or fireball.
The zanpakatou uses sound and light as part of its attacks, applying them on the field in the form of blasts, weaving the two together to form illusions, and creating tough shields.
