1: Because they're badass. No reason, really, besides their capability of absolutely destroying anything that gets in their way (and a little that doesn't) 2: If I recall correctly and Wikipedia has served well, 80 districts per direction (e.g. Rukongai North 17th district) = 320 districts. None of which are officially policed. (Sorry, couldn't think of anything witty)
Question: How many shinigami per squad?

I don't think theres a limit to the number of shinigami in a squad. They are limited to one captain, one vince captain, one or two 3rd seat, and i think an increasing amount of the lower seats (you can have lots of the same seat)
I'd say the number in the squad shows how much the captain is compensating for something. toushirou probably needs lots because he is short, and if matsumoto was a captain, she'd need hardly any, for obvious reasons.

Can they really have lots of the same seat? Because I remember Yumichika saying that he was only 5th seat because Ikkaku was 3rd seat. That was back when he fought Shûhei Hisagi during the Soul Society arc.
And yes, Arrancar are extreme badasses. Though I would have to say I would rather join the Vizards, because they have the ability to use both Shinigami and Hollow powers while the Arrancar seem limited to Hollow powers.

Anything with a Hollow mask and a zanpakutoh is awesome in my book! Except Ashido. He was okay. But yeah, which one I'd rather be...tough to say. I'm kinda leaning towards the vizard because I don't speak Spanish. Anyone else?

Nah, Yumichika didn't want to be 3rd seat, the extra pressure of being stronger... He had the chance, but turned it down. I think that's how it went anyway

I remember him saying that he thought the number three to be the most beautiful number but couldn't be 3rd seat cause Ikkaku was 3rd seat. So he decided to be 5th since he thought five was the second most beautiful. that's how I understood it at least, though it could be a difference in perspectives.

That does ring a bell... It could be that some captains allow more than one third seat, while others do not. It may be completely up to captains preference.

But what happens if everyone above third seat dies and the 2 or more 3rd seats have to run the squad? Who would actually be leading them until a new captain is placed? Sounds like to many chefs in the kitchen!

The Captain Commander would probably assign someone to lead the squad. Possibly a VC from another squad, or choose one of the 3rd seats...

Kind of. Your Zanpakutoh is an extension of your being. So technically, you only have one zanpakutoh spirit. However, that single spirit can take two separate forms. Different names, different abilities, but they will have a combined power of one Zanpakutoh spirit. They will act as one in the case of them giving you their power.
