Indeed, Ryu is correct.
When a soul is sent to Soul Society, they live their lives without needing any food. Once they release their spiritual power, they become hungry. Food in Soul Society is merely collections of (nice tasting) spirit particles. eating these replenishes your spiritual power.
Although, if you went for long enough without eating, your body would absorb all the spiritual particles necessary for rejuvination, unless you're outside of Soul Society or Hueco Mundo....
Still its advisable for Shinigami to eat.

SO do they eat things like fish, beef and vegetables? Like a human would?

In the few times you see them eating on the show. They are eating things that would be thought of as standard Japanese food.

Of course, everyone needs to drink water, even those Rukongai peasants. Everyone also has a bottomless bladder.
Say, I wonder: Does anything else exist for a shinigami's culinary experience? A filler episode tells us they can go into our world, use a gigai/some Phlenbotnium, and take cakes. They looked delicious and moist, too...

No, Vanilla Crazy Cakes.
But i suppose if they wanted to eat fish cakes, then they could. But it would be hard to overstate their satisfaction at eating a vanilla crazy cake.

Ah, yes. We have a new theme, apparently. In fact, we have several. There's "Neutrality" (which is a decent change), the current "Black & Red" (which is no longer accurately named), "Default" (which sucks), and "Old School" (which has the iconic Black & Red). For those who don't know, to change themes, go from your profile to "Modify Profile." Scroll down, find the theme option, and set it to you liking. Don't forget to hit "save profile" at the bottom of the screen, then return to the main page.
As for where everyone is...this place goes through stages where we have 4 staff members (somehow...>_>), 8 members, and 55 guests on at once...and it has stages like now. I prefer the busier times, personally.

We had a Google Bot on yesterday...
Anyway, I thought we could do with a change... although Neutrality was a good effort by Juno, I didn't quite like it. Of course, now that we have a few possible profiles on here, people can choose what they want! It's still semi-accurate, its got black, and it has red... Just because theres a blue in there too, and a touch of purple.....

Heh. Well I made neutrality to just please me! I needed something with minimal contrast cuz I am prone to headaches and I also needed something less noticeable for when I am in school... >.> Yeah. I plan on making the most ridiculously bright and offensive to the eyes skin that I can, too!

Question 1) Why would you want to? Question 2) How many districts in Rukongai?
