This is a general thing regarding Shikai and Bankai.
Sealed weapon: This is *always* a blade of some kind. whether its a dagger, a broadsword, or a katana. it has no special abilities
Shikai: This is the first released form of your weapon.. or rather, the "real" form of it. This weapon almost always changes form from the standard katana. Some people may have a constantly released form weapon, which means you're in shikai constantly. Abilities here can be pretty varied, but are generally around a weapon change.
For hand to hand fighters, these will probably be small weapons like knuckle dusters or daggers. For ranged people, it'll be some kind of ranged weapon like a bow, cannon etc...
Bankai: This is your final weapon form. This has no limitations on form - it can show up as anything at all. Attacks in this have very little limitations too. There is really just one rule that we 100% enforce.
No insta-gib weapons or attacks. No instant-kill, no insta-anything. No weapon has the ability to kill without the chance for a defense. Technically, any attack can insta-kill - it's called stabbing in the heart. Just roleplay it!
